unnamed-1
As we begin our 11th-ish year together as a congregation, I find myself feeling so thankful for the time we have shared in the past AND the time that is before us.  It was the first Sunday in Advent 2007 that we began to worship together every Sunday.
It seems appropriate, as Advent recognizes the beginning of something new, something becoming, something breaking forth into the world.  It is thrilling to imagine how God will move through us and in us in this Advent season and into a new year.
“All is calm, all is bright,” are the words—the hope – that claim us this Advent season at KUCC.  “All is calm, all is bright,” but it’s not, not altogether. We are living in times of tension, an imbalance of wealth, at odds with the other rather than embracing our differences, uncertain at times of how or if we want to love one another as we have first been loved.
And yet, in the midst of our uncertainty or fear or even resolve, the Christ Child comes to live and move among us, once more.  “All is calm, all is bright,” well, yes, it can be.  Not because of who we are or are not, but because of who God is and how God’s incarnation of love in the person of a baby can change and transform our lives into calm and bright.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the beloved Christmas hymn, “Silent Night Holy Night.”  The history of this hymn may seem like a fairy tale – it was sung by guitar accompaniment for the first time on that long ago Christmas Eve, because the mice chewed through the bellows, the wind makers in the organ, yet for many of us the words of this hymn bring the hope of the Christmas season into our hearts.
We know that the promise of Christmas love born in us can bring Peace, Joy, Love and Hope into our lives, in our communities and throughout our world.  This Advent season, may we move closer to the hope and to the reality that all can be calm, all can be bright.
