Rev. Dr. Timothy C. Downs (or just “Tim” as we know him at KUCC) served the United Church of Christ in many settings over the course of 38 years of ministry. Following graduation from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1974, he served as a pastor of local churches in New England for ten years, and in Pennsylvania for eleven years. In 1996 he was called to serve as the Conference Minister of the Southeast Conference for seventeen years, retiring in 2013.
Over the course of his conference ministry, the conference grew 70% in membership and 60% in giving to the denomination. As conference minister he also served at one time or another on the Boards of all of the Covenanted Ministries of the United Church of Christ as well as the Executive Council. He also served briefly on the Board of Trustees of Talladega College and Lancaster Theological Seminary.
From 1998 until the present he has taught United Church of Christ History Polity and Theology as an adjunct professor at Candler School of Theology, Vanderbilt Divinity School, The Interdenominational Theological Center, Lancaster Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary (NYC). Since retirement he has taught the class online continuously for three semesters a year. He retired from teaching in April, 2018.
Tim Downs lives in Atlanta and is married to Carol Kobayashi. They are parents of two adult sons, and have one grandson.
